Working meeting with the SMO ČR president on further development of cooperation

On 4 August 2026, representatives of Mayors of Slovakia held a working meeting with Mgr. František Lukl, MPA, president of the Union of Towns and Municipalities of the Czech Republic (SMO ČR). The meeting built on previous communication and created space to set the further cooperation between both organisations more concretely.

Mayors of Slovakia has long supported practical connections between municipalities, expert capacities and partner organisations from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine. The ambition is to build functional partnerships that do not remain only at the level of contacts and exchange of experience, but gradually lead to concrete joint activities and project concepts for the benefit of towns and municipalities. This approach was also part of the original cooperation proposal addressed to SMO ČR.

An important part of the further dialogue is the exchange of good practice between municipalities, preparation of joint projects and development of cross-border cooperation. Promising topics include digitisation and modernisation of public services, education, mobility and transport infrastructure, energy, territorial resilience and cooperation with Ukrainian towns and municipalities. In previous communication, Mayors of Slovakia also proposed creating clear contact and coordination points and a systematic way of preparing joint projects.

Particularly important is the opportunity to gradually connect Czech and Slovak experience of cooperation with Ukrainian municipalities and to create partnerships that can become a foundation for future cross-border, European and international projects.

The meeting created space for further specification of shared topics and practical cooperation opportunities between Mayors of Slovakia and SMO ČR.
